Irish Typewriter Keyboards

Underwood
This keyboard shows how the characters were laid out on the Underwood Irish typewriter. The typewriter had fewer keys than do modern ISO keyboards, and "missing" keys are coloured dark grey. Dead keys for the ponc séimhithe and the síneadh fada are found to the left of the keyboard, and would displace the letters from their engraved positions on the middle two rows if implemented on a modern computer keyboard. Note the absence of a digit one in the top row, but its presence at the right of the bottom row. Note also the position of the Y in the second row. Caps Lock was on the right hand shift key and a "caps release" key above that. The Gaelic 7-shaped "agus" sign (TIRONIAN SIGN ET) is given on shift-7. A revival version of the rough typewriter font, Darmhagh Underwood, is available.

Tower
This keyboard shows how the characters were laid out on the Tower Irish typewriter. The typewriter had fewer keys than do modern ISO keyboards, and "missing" keys are coloured dark grey. Dead keys for the síneadh fada and the ponc séimhithe are found to the right of the keyboard in the second row. A dedicated key for digit 1 is provided. The Gaelic 7-shaped "agus" sign (TIRONIAN SIGN ET) is given on shift-7. A revival version of the rough typewriter font, Teamhar Tower, and a rectified version Teamhair is available.

Royal
This keyboard shows how the characters were laid out on the Royal Irish typewriter. The typewriter had fewer keys than do modern ISO keyboards, and "missing" keys are coloured dark grey. Dead keys for the ponc séimhithe and the síneadh fada are found to the left of the keyboard in the third row (in the reverse position as those of the Tower Irish typewriter. The Royal Irish typewriter has some peculiar features. Gaelic forms of the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, and U are provided, and the Roman forms of the letters J, K, Q, W, X, Y, and Z are unchanged from the letters usually found on Royal typewriters. In addition, however, Roman forms of the letters D, G, and T are provided, presumably so that the typewriter could be used for English as well as Irish. No digit 1 key is given; capital I serves for it. Both the Latin "et"-shaped ampersand (&, AMPERSAND) and the Gaelic 7-shaped "agus" sign (TIRONIAN SIGN ET) are provided. A revival version of the rough typewriter font, Doire Royal, and a rectified version Doire is available.
