Yes, I think so. I've used the colours from "The Nursery 'Alice'" for Alice's dress and the Rabbit's livery. So far the Irish and Cornish editions are available with the revised cover. Esperanto will be soon, and English thereafter.

John, your comments are much appreciated and I'm glad you enjoyed the book.

With regard to Alice's character, my defence is in my introduction where I said I was not attempting to imitate Carroll's work in the way a forger imitates an old master. I wrote it primarily for my own daughter and secondly for children in general - but today's children. In Carroll's time, being a girl child was rather different.

CLD lived in a chauvenist age and openly voiced sexist views. For example, he referred to having nothing to do as "the sorest scourge of feminine humanity". I don't think such attitudes, or making Alice the archtypical dumb blonde, would be appropriate for a modern children's book, which is what I intended to write, albeit in a homage to Carroll's style.

If the book also appeals to adult Alice aficionados that's a collateral benefit. Nevertheless, your points are well taken and I hope my "modernisation" of Alice's character didn't affect your enjoyment too much.

This isn't surprising. I would venture to say that every Alice imitator has his or her own take on Alice.

You're right about the "cluelessness" of Carroll's Alice; but as Carolyn Sigler has shown, other authors using Alice as a calendar or using Wonderland have very often reacted to (or against) Carroll's Alice.

Only 30 years after Wonderland was published, Anna Richards sent a different Alice into Wonderland, Alice Lee -- who takes control of her experiences there.

I doubt that any of the "Alice imitators" has written an Alice who was exactly like Carroll's.

I agree. Eh? and Hey? are different for me, too. In the four instances where they occurred in Richards' book, however, it seemed to me that the right tag to use for a modern reader was the former.

Interestingly (I suppose), eh occurs once in Alice (in eh, stupid?) and not at all in Looking-Glass (unless you count Be-e-ehh!); hey occurs in neither.

Eh? is by no means hey? They have quite different connotations. (In my fiction writing, I have two characters one of whom uses eh? as a tag question, Canadian-style, and the other uses hey? as a tag, hayseed-style.

Well, I bought this (from amazon.com) and read it. It's very well done, except for one major complaint: the author has missed Alice completely.

Alice isn't clever. Alice doesn't get it. Alice is a conventional stuffy snob of a little Victorian girl. The wordplay and other things (including the death jokes) are almost always over her head.

In this book, Alice becomes part of the Wonderland set: she says things like "Oh, I see". But the real Alice never does see. Still, I'm glad I read it, as many of the conceits are very clever indeed.

The way it "jingles" is immediately recognisable as a one of those shepherd's counting systems (which are not just Cumbrian, see the fuller coverage at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_Tan_Tethera). Permit me a little correction on the Welsh: it's pump [pɪmp] not pemp. In your transcriptions, wyth is [uiθ] not [wɪθ] and pymtheg (etc) should [ˈpəmθeg] not [ˈpɪmθeg].

I had a similar idea for revamping Klingon 'Latinization' when I first looked into Klingon years ago. I was Latin-1 oriented at the time so I had thl > ç, ng > ñ, Q > x. The latter seems sensible to me still, as the capital barred-tail Ꝗ is hard to distinguish from ordinary Q, though I'm all for ng > ŋ and thl > ł. At the time Mark Shoulson informed me that most every Klingon beginner wants to somehow revamp the 'Latinization'! Honestly I don't care that much — Klingon doesn't have the right Lámatyáve for my me.

Wow, someone else knows how to count with teen, tain,....My grandmother from eastern Kentucky taught me how, and I'm the only grandchild to still have it memorized. Just curious to see if anyone else knew this jingle, I googled it, and your blog appeared.
--Iosifina

Wait a minute, we have had U+1D09 (LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED I) since 4.0, and U+1D77 (LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED G) since 4.1, and now that 5.1 is released we also have U+A781 LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED L.

So I think that the comment should be:

ʞɔɐqpǝǝɟ uʍop ǝpᴉsdn
• +++++++ɐ ¡uoᴉʇɔɐsuɐɹʇ ʇɐǝɹᵷ
¡ʇuǝɯʎɐd ʇsɐɟ ǝɥʇ ɹoɟ noʎ ʞuɐɥʇ 'ppɐ oʇ pǝʇuɐʍ osꞁɐ ᴉ

which displays OK with latest versions of both Everson Mono and Code2000 (except for the vertical alignment of the turned g).

He's used Hebrew final nun for the inverted l in "also" but of course now he should use the Lhuydian inverted l at U+A781.
